Our place in the environment

South Gloucestershire Leisure has a reputation as an excellent manager of energy consumption. There are two benefits of this approach. 1, It saves money which means we can invest in other areas of the centres, and 2, It is less harmful to the environment, improving the quality of life for our customers, staff and those people in our local communities, both today and in the future.

There are a range of measure that we take to reduce the energy we use, such as recording water consumption on a monthly basis. Savings have been made with low output shower-heads in the changing rooms, and we are benefiting from the installation of swimming pool covers. Water for all the sites is constantly in use due to fact that each person using our pools uses 3 litres of water.

Lower energy emissions reduce the total volume of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere. Our electric contract is now a "green contract", so all the consumption is carbon dioxide free. The year after this contract began we reduced carbon dioxide emissions by almost 2,000 cubic tonnes.

A 'CHP' is an engine that runs on gas, producing electricity and free hot water to use in the centres. Each centre runs a CHP engine. We have achieved best practice awards for CHPs and this was published in the Building Research Guide and we were recognised under the Sports Council's Best Practice for Leisure Centres.

 

Bradley Stoke, Thornbury and Yate all have meeting rooms and comfortable conference facilities.
